Article review

Article: Form follows nature : The origins of American organic architecture
Author:
Mark Mumford,
Journal of Architectural Education (1984-)
, Vol. 42, No. 3 (Spring, 1989), pp. 26-37
Published by: Blackwell Publishing on behalf of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, Inc.

http://www.jstor.org/stable/1425061

The article mainly talks about the "natural beauty" in architecture when forms following the nature. Three architects- Frank Furness, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright were founders of the American organic tradition in architecture. They both have same approaches to architecture radically departed from traditional ideas. All natural forms are dynamic. The forces and pressures which interact in the structure of an animal, the tensions of muscles and joints as the organism moves, the patterns of growth and development viable in the forms of plants or shells, present the image of living form.

Most of the time we simply forgot that the land here was once soft and hilly. Plants and animals used to breathe freely here. The land used to be the home of many flowers and plants. However, nowadays, we just cover the land with concrete, and pretended it was always cold and motionless.

The article digs into the importance of adapting organic system into architecture. Architects should be advised to seek inspiration in nature to achieve true beauty. Thus, the landscape and nature are essential to be preserved. A dynamic compositional structure is an vital element of organic form, which, is alive where the inner life of architecture is kept.

300 words of the theme - CONSTRUCTION

Construction is a process to put together out of artificial or natural components or parts. The word can also be expressed as the process of changing static forms of materials to be dynamic, or vice versa. Millions of elements can be formed to one single compound object. Millions of compound objects can formed a whole. The process of construction is the vital part , since the outcomes can be very similar in every objects. However, there are various ways to construct an object which can be experienced. The process can be seen as an journey, a journey which tells you a story of how the building was built.

Materials play an important role during the construction process, different materials can be constructed in different ways. Construction can be simple or elaborated. The complexity of construction has been changing throughout the years. From the early centuries, houses are mainly built by timber and stone. The materials are natural and organic, with no artificial touch. In the middle centuries, architecture turns to be complicated. To achieve the sense of beauty, complicated shapes of ornaments have been created to echo with human body. However, when architecture approaching to the modern world. The forms reverse to the original theory, simplicity. And yet, the forms are no longer organic anymore. The shapes are mainly squares, rectangular, cubes, etc. The most common materials used are bricks, concrete, glass and steel. The construction details are rigid.

The video that I am going to create is to show how the construction process changes throughout the centuries. From the very beginning, we build houses with the landscape, along with the most basic materials. To the modern time, construction is also simple yet typical. The video will also create an atmosphere to show the fact that we are destroying the landscape during the construction process.
The video is mainly divided into 2 parts, the first part is a summary of the style of construction changes throughout the years. The second part shows several weird ways of constructing buildings. The mood of the video will change from happiness/peacefulness( natural beauty of buildings) to sadness/disappointments( human starting to destroy the landscape), at last to more mysterious scenes( searching for alternative ways to construct buildings).

Concept of "SET"

Set, can be defined as settling down. To be settled down, at least two objects are to be involved. One to integrate, another to be integrated. During the process of integrating, "changes" must be applied to the surroundings.

Changes can lead to change of emotions, and it depends on how the process occurred. Such as explosion, the bomb integrate to the ground and cause serious damage o the landscape and surroundings. Also , emotions change when a person or group of people settling down in an unfamiliar space and that causes to anxiety/ excitement. It also applies to architecture, when a building integrate into the landscape, certain changes must be occurred to the surrounding neighbourhood.

The meanings of settling down and changing are in fact opposite. However, when one of them exist, the other one cannot be neglected, both of them have to be existed at the same time. And when the process of changing extend, the object which remained still cannot resist to start changing itself.
